Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. but the leading cause of death in Duval County. The cancer mortality rate in Duval County surpassed both the state and national cancer rates.
The U.S. spends 75 percent of 2.5 trillion annual healthcare dollars on treatment of chronic conditions. However, only three pennies of every dollar goes towards prevention.
That’s why each month armed with educational materials in conjunction with the cancer awareness calendar, staff and volunteers take our awareness message to the streets by canvassing neighborhoods in Duval County with the highest cancer deaths in our city. Health Zones 1 (32202, 32204, 32206, 33208, 32254) Health Zones 4 (32209, 32218, 32219, 32220, 32226, 32234 and Health Zone 5 (32210, 32221, 32215, 32222 )promoting early detection and screenings, engaging in one-on-one conversations on the signs, symptoms and risk factors of preventable cancers.
When necessary, we refer those under-served or uninsured to resources available for free or reduced cost screenings. SHFI, believes that these individual encounters could possibly save a life. (Click here to Volunteer) link to Hands on Jacksonville Page
