My journey as a cancer survivor, caregiver, and widow is the foundation of SisterHermana.
In October 2012, I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. Early detection—prompted by the BUDDY Check 12 program and an unexpected moment with my granddaughter—saved my life. Treatment unfolded alongside caring for my ill grandfather, navigating hospital stays, job loss, financial hardship, and the uncertainty of waiting for my husband’s IBEW work assignment in Beaumont, Texas. These overlapping responsibilities revealed how isolating and overwhelming the cancer experience can be for families.
Determined to give purpose to my experience, I became an advocate for early detection and survivorship. I distributed BUDDY Check 12 kits, encouraged women newly diagnosed with cancer, and reached community members—many of whom had never been taught how to recognize warning signs or access support beyond medical care.
In April 2014, cancer returned to my life when my husband, Horace Nathaniel Glover Sr., was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. On October 6, 2014, after 27 years together, I held him as he took his final breath at the age of 49. His death revealed the urgent gaps families face after diagnosis—gaps that research alone does not address—particularly when cancers that are often preventable go undetected.
From that loss came clarity and resolve. I committed to creating SisterHermana to fight for those living with cancer on the other side of research. Through culturally transcendent, family-driven, and youth-inclusive services, where no individual or family has to face cancer unsupported.

SisterHermana Foundation
The SisterHermana Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that helps people and families going through cancer treatment, no matter the type of cancer. And because a cancer survivor started it, SisterHermana knows that cancer brings not only medical issues but also many other challenges. While cancer treatment focuses on physical health, many families also struggle with money problems, not enough food, unstable housing, and surprise expenses that can slow recovery. SisterHermana steps in to help with essential daily living needs, always treating people with respect and care. Our work is powered by the generosity of our Friends of SisterHermana community and those who give online or directly to families. Our work is guided by three main pillars: Family Support, Advocacy and Outreach, and Cancer Awareness and Education. SisterHermana is more than just a foundation; we are a community. We honor strength, celebrate survivors, and ensure no one on our client list faces cancer alone.
Our mission is twofold: to support individuals undergoing any type of cancer treatment through culturally inclusive, family-centered, and youth-engaged services, and to educate at-risk communities to recognize early signs and symptoms of breast, colon, and prostate cancer in order to reduce late-stage diagnoses and mortality rates.
