My journey as a cancer survivor, caregiver, and widow is the foundation of SisterHermana.
On November 5 2011, I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. My treatment began in February 2012, following a path to recovery made possible by early detection prompted by the BUDDY Check 12 program and an accidental kick to the breast by my granddaughter. That moment truly saved my life.
However, my recovery didn't happen in a vacuum. Treatment unfolded while I was caring for my ill grandfather, navigating hospital stays, facing job loss, and managing financial hardship. These overlapping challenges revealed how isolating and overwhelming the cancer experience is for the entire family.
Determined to give my experience purpose, I became an advocate for breast cancer early detection. In April 2014, cancer struck my family again when my husband, Horace Nathaniel Glover Sr., was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. On October 6, 2014, after 27 years together, I held him as he took his final breath at the age of 49.
His passing exposed the urgent gaps families face—gaps that medical research alone does not bridge. From that loss came clarity and resolve. I established our “Taking it to the Streets for Life” program to get cancer education into the hands of as many people as possible, ensuring others do not lose a loved one to a cancer that is curable if detected early.
I committed to creating SisterHermana to fight for those living with cancer "on the other side of research." Through culturally transcendent, family-driven, and youth-inclusive services, we ensure no individual or family has to face cancer unsupported.
Veronica Glover Founder & Executive Director SisterHermana Foundation
SisterHermana Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports individuals and families impacted by cancer with dignity, compassion, and integrity, serving all people without discrimination. Founded by a cancer survivor, SisterHermana understands that cancer brings more than medical challenges it often creates financial strain, food insecurity, housing instability, and unexpected expenses that can slow recovery.
While treatment focuses on physical health, SisterHermana steps in to help meet essential daily living needs, always centering care, respect, and dignity. Our work is powered by the generosity of the Friends of SisterHermana community, individual donors, and direct community support.
Our mission is carried out through three core pillars: Family Support, Advocacy and Outreach, and Cancer Awareness and Education. SisterHermana is more than a foundation we are a community that honors strength, celebrates survivors, and ensures that no one on our client list faces cancer alone.
Our mission is twofold: to support individuals undergoing any type of cancer treatment through culturally inclusive, family-centered, and youth-engaged services, and to educate at-risk communities to recognize early signs and symptoms of breast, colon, and prostate cancer in order to reduce late-stage diagnoses and mortality rates.
We believe in a 'village' approach to healing. By partnering with oncology social workers and healthcare professionals, we ensure that every family referred to us receives timely, equitable, and dignified support. These professional partnerships allow us to safeguard our community and manage our resources with the utmost integrity.
