I started the SisterHermana Foundation because my experience with cancer was not only a medical battle—it was a fight for everyday survival. I was diagnosed in 2012 and completed treatment in 2013. In 2014, I lost my husband, Horace, to colon cancer. What many people didn’t see was the weight we carried behind closed doors. While he traveled out of state searching for work, I was home trying to hold everything together for our family. There were days when basic bills felt impossible, unexpected home repairs pushed us to the edge, and transportation to treatment became a struggle that brought me to tears.
I know what it feels like to be strong in public while quietly unraveling in private. I know what it is to pray for a breakthrough, to fight exhaustion with faith, and to feel alone even while surrounded by people. Those experiences shaped me and opened my eyes to the hidden burdens families face during cancer treatment—the financial strain, the emotional toll, the fear of losing both your loved one and your stability at the same time.
The SisterHermana Foundation was born from that place—from lived experience, from heartbreak, and from a promise I made to myself that others should never have to walk through cancer without support.
Our mission is simple but powerful: to stand in the gap for individuals in active cancer treatment by helping with everyday, non-medical needs that can easily overwhelm a family. Whether it’s housing and utilities, food, essential repairs, or support during life’s special moments, we show up with empathy, compassion, stewardship, and integrity.
SisterHermana is more than a foundation. It is my testimony turned into service. It is a community built for warriors and their families—a village that wraps around people at their most vulnerable moments. And it is my way of honoring Horace’s memory, my survival, and every person who has ever held on by a thread and kept going.

The SisterHermana Foundation, Inc. (SHF) is a grassroots, volunteer-driven social impact organization with a bold mission: to inform the community about cancer, educate on its signs and symptoms, and support those in active treatment.
Through our Friends of SisterHermana, the individuals, churches, small businesses, and community groups who stand with us, we help meet the everyday, non-medical needs of those we serve. This support may include housing and utility assistance, groceries, or unexpected home repairs. At times, our help extends to special family moments, such as covering graduation fees for seniors, purchasing prom attire, providing Christmas toys, or ensuring a holiday meal.
Empathy, Compassion, Stewardship, and Integrity are the principles that guide our work. They shape how we serve, how we show up in the community, and how we honor the trust placed in us by those we support and those who believe in our mission.

The SisterHermana Foundation is proudly 100% volunteer-led and operated. Our volunteers are the heart of our mission, turning compassion into action every single day. Their dedication allows us to meet the diverse needs of those we serve and strengthen our community.
Whether they’re sharing life-saving information door-to-door, organizing toy and food drives, or offering hands-on support, their commitment embodies true service, solidarity, and care. With every act of kindness, they create genuine human connections that remind us all: no one fights alone.
