My experiences as a cancer survivor, caregiver, and widow form the foundation of SisterHermana. I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer on November 5, 2011, and began treatment in February 2012. Early detection, prompted by the BUDDY Check 12 program and an accidental kick to the breast from my granddaughter, set me on the path to recovery.
However, my journey to recovery occurred alongside caring for my ill grandfather, managing both of our hospital stays, coping with job loss, and facing financial hardship. These challenges highlighted how isolating and overwhelming cancer can be for the entire family. I completed treatment in November of 2012.
In April 2014, my husband, Horace Nathaniel Glover Sr., was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer metastasized to the liver. On October 6, 2014, after 27 years together, I held him as he passed away at age 49. In the aftermath, I questioned whether my survival was due to recognizing breast cancer signs, while we lacked awareness of colon cancer’s warning signs. I knew to watch for a lump, but we didn't realize symptoms like gas, bloating, and other changes could signal something more serious.
His passing revealed urgent gaps families face, gaps medical research alone can't address. That loss brought clarity and resolve. I established our 'Taking it to the Streets for Life' program to provide vital cancer education to as many people as possible. SisterHermana shares information not only on breast cancer, but also on colon, prostate, and testicular cancer, because men's health often receives too little attention and men need to feel comfortable discussing symptoms.
I cannot change what happened to Horace, but I am committed to supporting those living with cancer 'on the other side of research.' Through culturally inclusive, family-driven, and youth-focused services, we ensure that no individual or family faces cancer alone.
